Plants for the shady side of the garden.

We are a small growing nursery with four glasshouses and an old walled yard. Almost everything we sell was propagated here: ferns from spores and divisions, hostas and hellebores from our own stock plants, all potted in peat-free compost.

Opening

Thursday to Sunday, 10:00–16:00, March to October. Winter by appointment.

Collection

Order by email and collect from the yard gate. We hold plants for seven days.

Delivery

Our own van within about 30 km, on Wednesdays. No courier — plants travel badly in boxes.

Before you plant in shade

  1. Dry shade under trees and damp shade by a north wall want different plants. Tell us which you have.
  2. Dig in leaf mould, not grit. Most woodland plants want soil that holds water.
  3. Water through the first summer even if the label says drought tolerant.

Not sure what will do well? Send a photo of the spot at midday and we will suggest a short list.
